What is in it for you?
Jom Science, Malaysia! aims to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in Malaysia to a global audience. We will work with you to inform and educate readers about STEM. This initiative provides an opportunity for you to:
i) Hone your skills in writing concisely.
ii) Create a content that motivates readers.
iii) Use your creativity to inspire readers.
iv) Get your work known to people

What type of work can you submit?
We acknowledge all content that is related to STEM. Ideally, you will submit one image/video, and a 100-word write-up describing the piece. When writing up the description, you can use the 5W1H method - i.e: What, where, when, who, why, and how. Importantly, focus on why you were interested in doing the work, and how will it benefit the society. Try to describe your work simple enough for general public to understand. 🙂
If you require assistance with the write-up, please feel free to ask us! After submitting your image/video and write-up to us, we will go through your work and edit it (if necessary). We will let you know approximately when will your post be up on the platform.
The content can include (but not limited to):
(i) Life experiences/ups and downs/graduations
You can submit a head-shot of yourself and write up a brief description about your life. The post can be inspired from your daily routine in the lab, juggling parenthood and lab work, challenges you faced in your career, and activities that you do to de-stress after a busy day. You can also submit your graduation/award-presentation pictures with a description that highlights your achievement.
(ii) Important take-away message from a seminar/conference
You can submit images of a conference brochure (or something related to the conference - i.e: free gifts!) and describe what you have learnt from the conference. For example, you can upload an image of your name tag from a cancer-focused conference and talk about how the conference has helped you better understand cancer immunotherapies.
(iii) Flora and fauna
As a beautiful tropical country, Malaysia is a home to a large variety of flora and fauna – and some of them have medicinal or therapeutic values. These posts may help create awareness for the readers to appreciate the environment.
(iv) Fun and colourful science!
We welcome any image that is colourful and captivating – e.g: microscopy, histochemistry, microfuge tube containing GFP/YFP/any fluorescent tag/protein.
(v) Lab bench/office spaces
You can submit pictures of a clean laboratory bench and describe the steps that are usually taken to keep the bench neat and clean. You can also submit a picture of the fire exit/PPE and an accompanying post that describes the importance of safety in the lab.
(vi) Graphics design/STEM art
One way to make STEM fun is by incorporating art into it. This category will help you unleash your creativity. You can submit an artistic picture that depicts scientific processes or biological components.
(vii) Scientific/Technology advancements
This category is for depicting the before-and-after of a scientific technology. For this post, you can compare the usefulness of a scientific advancement and give opinions on the technology. For example, you can send us two different images (and we can “swipe left” to see the second image) – a typical micropipette VS an electronic pipette. You can talk about the advantages and disadvantages of using either pipette, and give an opinion of this advancement.
